Time for a Check-Up

Jason's Article Oct 2013 Second Choice

Visiting the doctor for a check-up isn’t something you have to do. A person can go for a while and not perceive any ill-effects. But over a longer period of time we know that lack of attention to one’s health is detrimental. Maladies occur that if caught earlier could have been easily treated. But now they need extra attention.

The Church is Body of Christ

That’s true for a person, but consider for a moment that the same is true for a congregation. The apostle Paul wrote that the church is like a body:

Indeed, the body does not consist of one member but of many. If the foot were to say, ‘Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body’, that would not make it any less a part of the body. And if the ear were to say, ‘Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body’, that would not make it any less a part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. If all were a single member, where would the body be? As it is, there are many members, yet one body. First Corinthians 12:14-20

Like a person, a congregation is a living organism. Like a person, a congregation needs different members of the body who function in different ways for the benefit of the whole. Like a person, a congregation can be under stress. Like a person, a congregation can be healthy. Like a person, a congregation benefits from taking time to consider where it is and where it is going….not unlike a check-up.

Saturday October 19th 9:00 am – 2:00 pm

That’s what we intend to do together as a congregation on Saturday, October 19th. We will be visited by Ms. Rebecca Kolowe, Director of Evangelical Mission for the Southeastern Synod of the ELCA. She will talk about our ministry with us. She will guide us through a process where we look at where we are and where we want to go. We will begin to investigate questions that a doctor might ask during a check-up: “What stage of life are we in?” and “How healthy are we?” We will discuss ways we can be healthier, even consider what new habits need adapting. I can’t wait for this Saturday. It will be fun and beneficial.

This is an important event. Please make every attempt to join us. Lunch will be provided. Childcare will be provided.

Yours in Christ,
Pastor Jason Talsness
